linklove. [president-elect barack obama special edition.]

  • [the big picture] the next president of the united states

  • [yes, and?] specifically "i’m driving home at whatever time last night and some dj on whatever radio station i’m listening to is playing that tupac song and when it gets to the part where he says and although it seems heaven sent/ we ain’t ready, to see a black president, the dj just loops that line for something like ten minutes."

  • [don't stop believin']

  • [yes we can hold babies] i think this how we all feel right now

  • [ny times] a moment in time, upon reflection; for striving 6th graders, history is now

  • [dooce] newsletter: month-fiftyseven "finally, i wanted to talk to you about what happened last night, how your father and i and millions of other people across the country helped elect the first african american president. leta, you are so lucky to have been born in an era where this is possible, in a time where generations have come together to stop the sick cycle of bigotry that has been passed down from fathers to sons, mothers to daughters, where we have finally stood up and said, enough, we are more civilized than all of that. i have never been more proud to be an american than i am today, and when you are old enough to understand the significance of this election, when years from now you ask me where i was when i found out that barack obama had won, i'll tell you that while there were millions of people dancing in the streets and gathered at parties, thousands more across the world chanting in impromptu parades, i was sitting on the couch next to your father, our fingers intertwined, the two of us alone with the dogs asleep at our feet. the television was an eruption of noise and chaos, but we sat there quietly absorbing the moment, worried that if we blinked we'd wake up out of a dream."

  • [slog] bumpin'.

  • [the space of good] "i ride the 7 bus to work those mornings i can’t face my bicycle. it comes up from south seattle and traverses rich and poor neighborhoods, the international district, pioneer square and downtown. usually, it is a hateful, loud, messy conglomeration of tired people. this morning, an older black man sat with a grin on his face. he was dressed for construction work. out of the blue, he shouted, “yes, we can!”"

  • [electrolicious] tonight i am so proud to be an american

  • [fake sarah palin] and that's a wrap.

  • [thomas l. friedman] finishing our work "and so it came to pass that on nov. 4, 2008, shortly after 11 p.m. eastern time, the american civil war ended, as a black man — barack hussein obama — won enough electoral votes to become president of the united states."

  • [ejshea] things to keep in mind "i voted for barack obama because i believed he was mandate for real change. not just one who will substitute current conservative policies for liberal ones, although admittedly those will happen more easily under this administration. no, the change i'm talking about is the kind that allows for all voices to be heard. i do not want a liberal version of the last eight years, where the concerns of millions are trampled upon in service of the agenda of a small few. that is not a democracy, and i firmly believe that obama is the sort of leader who will surprise so many who think that by electing him we have signed on for politics as usual. i believe obama is intelligent, compassionate, thoughtful and considerate. i believe he will surprise us all."

  • [fighting monsters with rubber swords] her world "tonight, twenty minutes ago, i watched the clock tick down to the polls closing on the west coast, and as soon as it hit zero, i saw the words on the screen as the networks pronounced barack obama the president-elect of the united states. i watched the tears and laughter of people in grant park, white and black, as they watched history, real history being made. it wasn't just history stepping on them, squashing them under its cold boot like history has been doing since 2001. it was the history they made, the history that we have made. now i sit here. i'm waiting for barack obama to come out and address the nation as the 44th president of the united states of america, and for the first time in the span of schuyler's short life, i can say it, without hesitation and with a heart filled with anticipation and a sense of relief and rescue and possibility. this is the world i want for my daughter. this one."
